Spa Marketing Resource AreaTo Blog or Not to Blog…That is the Question! (Part One)

People and search engines love blogs. When done right, blogs will effectively improve your search visibility, promote your brand, and give you a competitive edge.  No doubt about that... just see how many blogs come up in search engine results pages. So why is it that so many spas and day spas are reluctant to embrace blog technology?

Search engines love blogs.  A blog naturally tends to rank higher in search results on specific topics, because blogs have a freshness factor that most day spa sites can't achieve. Let’s be honest, when was the last time you updated your website? I mean really updated it? If you’re like most day spas, it’s probably been months, if not longer.

Blogs offer fresh content and that’s exactly what search engines are looking for. Search spiders can quickly crawl through blog content making it easy to index on a regular basis.

People love blogs. Blogs establish community by soliciting feedback from readers. We know that people like belonging to a community where their voice is heard.  Blogs are considered more trustworthy and “genuine” than the “corporate” message found on website pages. Due to its interactive nature, a good blog will boost the visibility of your website & the credibility of your brand, services, and products.

When people love your content, they’ll subscribe to your blog via an RSS feed and your posts will be delivered to them as it’s published.

What’s a good blog, and more importantly, how do you make one great? A good blog has something to say to its audience. If the content and dialogue rings true, visitors will get hooked on it. Bloggers make friends with other bloggers. When other bloggers like your content they tend to provide favorable exposure on their own blogs linking back to your site – which will improve your website traffic.

Well-written and relevant blog posts will build the author’s credibility and establish that person as a thought leader in the community and/or industry.  Don’t you want to be THE authority on spa services in your area? Of course you do.

Blogs can be set up quickly and incorporated into your website. Two good open source applications are WordPress and Moveable Type.

So, should you start a blog or not? As stated above, unarguably a blog can be very beneficial for your day spa. With a concentrated effort to engage your audience, you can improve your company's reputation and increase traffic to your site - thereby growing your customer base.

However, if you’re intimidated by your customers and what they may say about your day spa, you’ll need to give it a lot of thought…or be committed to make yours a GREAT blog!

In the end, although a blog can help establish your online presence and give you a competitive edge, the answer to whether a blog is right for your business is…undoubtedly, maybe.
